It was a tremendous winter sports season at Addison Trail, and the student-athletes certainly continued the Blazer Pride that is Addison Trail Athletics!

See a recap with highlights below.

BOYS SWIMMING

The AT-WB Boys Swim and Dive Team had a successful season, with personal best swims during the Conference meet hosted by Downers Grove South High School and during the Sectional meet hosted at East Leyden High School. This year, the team was able to train at College of DuPage and enjoyed adapting to a new “home” pool. Three Addison Trail seniors on the team competed at the varsity level for four years: Matthew Burrow not only swam for our team, but he also was our team diver. Gerald Legaspi specialized in freestyle and backstroke. Michal Niemirski was our team captain and specialized in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events.

WRESTLING

Varsity wrestling finished the season on a high note, with junior Seth Skamra qualifying for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Boys Wrestling State Tournament, and freshman Autumn Oregon-Williams and sophomore JD Quijano Perez qualifying for the IHSA Girls Wrestling State Tournament. Skamra and sophomore Manuel Galeana also earned All-Conference honors. Six seniors earned All-Academic honors: Analise D’Alessandro, Alex Martinez, Stephany Mondragon, Nancy Perez, Emily Rivera Perea and Alejandro Roman. The boys varsity team finished with a 1-5 dual-meet record in Conference and a 3-13 overall dual-meet record. The girls wrestling team finished 4th in Conference and had a 6-4 dual-meet record.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

The Girls Gymnastics Team members ended the season with their best performance at Regionals. They placed 4th in Conference after struggling to put together a full lineup all season: The girls battled injuries and COVID-19. Importantly, four of the five student-athletes on varsity finished the season with a GPA above 3.0. While remaining studious, sophomore Nicolette Franczak, senior Delaney Gregory and junior Maddie Muccianti all made Sectionals. Congratulations to all on a good season.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Boys Basketball Team finished the season with an overall record of 13-17 and 3-9 in Conference. Senior co-captain Jacob Daniels was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Elmwood Park Thanksgiving Tournament. Senior Nathan Johnson was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Maine East Holiday Tournament. Daniels also was named to the All-Conference Team. Daniels and fellow seniors Peter Savinos, Zachary Soderberg and Matthew Sobus were named to the All-Academic Team. For our team awards, senior co-captain Samuel Renc was voted MVP, and Savinos was voted Most Improved.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Varsity Girls Basketball Team finished the season with a 17-10 record and a 10-2 Conference record (2nd place). The team took 4th place in the Hinsdale South Thanksgiving Tournament and took 3rd place in the Lisle Holiday Tournament. Quiana Birmingham, Juliana Nasti, Mariangely Velez Capo and Gia Napoli earned All-Conference honors. The team also had nine seniors named to the All-Academic Team: Birmingham, Nasti, Velez, Napoli, Diana Villegas-Hernandez, Briana Florian, Roselynn Martinez, Jazmin Martinez and Jasmine Cosio.

GIRLS BOWLING

The Varsity Girls Bowling Team finished 3-5 on the season. That record was good for a 5th-place finish in Conference. The team qualified for the Sectional Tournament, which has not been done since 2005. Junior Kylie Fiermuga had a 280 game during the Regional Tournament, which helped the Blazers move on to the Sectional. Individual accomplishments included Fiermuga earning All-Conference honors. Her 186 average was the 6th-best average in Conference. Academic All-Conference bowlers are seniors Sarah Soucie and Lindsay Stevenson. The Regional Team included Fiermuga, Soucie, Stevenson, senior Jaquelin Benitez and freshmen Valentina Pizzoferrato, Grace Cannizzo, Amelia Leslie and Angelina Ayala. The future looks bright for the Blazer bowlers.

CHEERLEADERS

Addison Trail’s cheer season went from August 2021 to February 2022. This season, the team attended all football games and more than 15 basketball games to cheer on their fellow Blazers! The cheer team performed during halftime at all home football and basketball games. The team also performed during the annual homecoming pep rally, walked in the annual Addison-Medinah Shriners Parade and hosted the annual Kiddie Camp, which had more than 25 campers this year. The team also participated in two competitions. During the competition season, varsity captain Giovanna Mosely (a senior) earned 1st place in the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association (ICCA) Scholarship program.

Thank you, Blazers, for a remarkable winter season. We look forward to many future successes.
