Addison Trail to present fall play, ‘Trap’

Addison Trail Theatre invites you to attend a thrilling performance unlike any you’ve experienced before when the school presents its fall play, “Trap” by Stephen Gregg, on Oct. 21, 22 and 23.

The show takes place in Menachap, Calif., and provides a truly immersive production. According to https://www.playscripts.com/play/3122, “Trap” tells the story of “an incomprehensible event: every person in the audience of a high school play falls unconscious – every person but one. Using interviews with witnesses, loved ones, first responders and the investigators pursuing the case, a theatre ensemble brings the story of the strange event to life, documentary-style. But as the strands weave together into an increasingly dangerous web, it becomes clear that this phenomenon might not be entirely in the past. Unnerving, exhilarating and wildly inventive, you’ve never walked into anything quite like ‘Trap.’”

“I hope audience members have a visceral reaction and walk away feeling like theatre is fun,” said Anna McSweeney, Addison Trail Theatre Director.

McSweeney said she saw “Trap” during the International Thespian Festival in 2018, and it was an experience she will never forget. She said she wanted to bring the production to Addison Trail this year as an entertaining distraction from the adversity of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

“It’s just amazing to be back on stage,” McSweeney said. “To see the students connecting on stage again and making theatre is tremendous.”

Addison Trail junior Lea Staller (Detective Gwendolyn Heche), senior Adam Sakleh (Ephrain Salas) and senior Fernando Padua III (Jonathan Mollusk/Ensemble 1/Brian Gurbuxani) said understanding, unraveling and conveying the complexity of the dialogue has been a fun challenge, and the cast and crew are working hard to bring the details of the show to life.

“The play has a lot of layers – even as members of the cast, we continue to find new aspects and meaning,” they said. “We want everyone to be left in awe at the end.”
