Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department set to assist students with course registration for 2019-20 school year

The Willowbrook Guidance Department is committed to making sure students are informed about the various courses available to them at Willowbrook.

As part of that commitment, the Guidance Department hosted presentations throughout January to share information with students.

  • Jan. 9: Advanced Coursework Lunch-N-Learn presentation for students regarding Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and Dual-Credit courses. This presentation featured alumni who are AP Scholars.

  • Jan. 17: Curriculum Showcase (an opportunity for incoming students and their parents/guardians to learn about the academic programs offered at Willowbrook).

Elective presentations

  • Jan. 8: Freshmen Elective Presentation, Music
  • Jan. 9: Freshmen Elective Presentation, Art
  • Jan. 10: Freshmen Elective Presentation, Career and Technical Education (CTE)
  • Jan. 15: Sophomores and Juniors Elective Presentation, Music
  • Jan. 16: Sophomores and Juniors Elective Presentation, Art
  • Jan. 18: Sophomores and Juniors Elective Presentation, Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Counselors also will present to sophomores from Jan. 22 to 25 regarding the course selection process for the coming school year, and they will present to juniors about that topic the week of Jan. 29.

Each freshman recently met with his or her counselor for a freshman interview and course selection meeting. Sophomores will meet individually with counselors between Jan 28 and Feb. 1 for course selection, and juniors will meet with counselors between Feb. 4 and 8 for a junior interview and course selection meeting. During these meetings, counselors will review teacher recommendations and each student’s college/career plans when selecting courses.

The Guidance Department will welcome members of the class of 2023 during their first course selection appointments on Jan. 19 and will conclude those meetings on Jan. 24 and 26.

Course selection is a vital part of a student’s high school career, and parental involvement is essential to assist students in making successful academic choices. To view the Course Listing Guide in English and Spanish, go to https://www.dupage88.net/site/page/19.

Below are important reminders regarding the course selection process:

  • Students should consider their future college/career choices when choosing courses.
  • Students need to be enrolled in at least six periods, plus a lunch.
  • Schedules are computer generated, so counselors are unable to confirm a specific schedule.
  • A parent/guardian must review course selections on PowerSchool.
  • Support classes are beneficial for students who need additional academic support during the day, or for students involved in extracurricular activities who need additional study or academic support time during the school day.
  • Naviance is a great tool to assist with the college/career planning process and to examine course sequences, which can assist students during course selection.
  • Course selections will be considered final after Feb. 15.
