Village of Lombard 2017 Youth Leadership Program

The Village of Lombard is now accepting applications for its 2017 Youth Leadership Program, which is open to high school students who live in Lombard and are interested in learning about local government and public service. Participating students will receive interactive presentations and tours from leaders in the Village Manager’s Office, as well as the Finance, Community Development, Police, Fire and Public Works departments.

Below are details of the program:

  • Session 1: 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 2 at Village Hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave. in Lombard
  • Session 2: 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 9 at Fire Station 2, 50 E. St. Charles Road
  • Session 3: The final session will coincide with a regularly scheduled Village Board Meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Village Hall. Students will be recognized by Lombard’s Village President and Board of Trustees and will be presented with a certificate of completion for the program.

The Youth Leadership Program is an initiative of the village’s Community Relations Committee, which is focused on creating and fostering relationships between the Village of Lombard and its residents.

“The goal of the program is to provide the opportunity for high school-aged Lombard students to learn about the inner workings of their local government,” Community Relations Chair and Lombard Trustee Robyn Pike said in a press release. “It also allows students to see how each department works together to get things done. This is a fun experience, a great way to learn about the village, and it also could be a helpful addition to college résumés.”

The class size is limited to 10 students. Staff also will share their contact information with participants to serve as future mentors as students apply to colleges and transition into careers. All students who are 14 to 18 years old are invited to apply – however, Lombard residents will be given preferential admittance. A minimum of seven students is required for the program to take place. Applications are available online at www.villageoflombard.org/youthleadership and can be dropped off at Village Hall or e-mailed to meadea@villageoflombard.org by 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. Students chosen for the program will be notified by Jan. 31.
