DISTRICT 88 VISION AND GOALS ALIGNED TO STATE AND FEDERAL STANDARDS
In 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was passed as a new education law that reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the U.S. national education law and longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. The previous version of the law was the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, which was enacted in 2002.

The ESSA was implemented on the Illinois Report Card in October 2018 for the first time and uses multiple measures (referred to as indicators) to evaluate schools. Each individual school (rather than the overall district) is rated on those indicators and then placed into one of four categories (referred to as designations). Those designations are:

  • Exemplary School
  • Commendable School
  • Underperforming School
  • Lowest-Performing School

When looking at District 88’s Strategic Plan from 2010, our Board of Education, administration and stakeholders knew the value of including multiple measures to ensure student growth and achievement. As a result, our vision and goals are very much aligned with the ESSA, as you can see by the image below (click to enlarge the image).

VIDEO CLIPS (from District 88 Board of Education meetings)

During the Aug. 27 meeting, we shared general information about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Click the image above to watch a video of the presentation.

During the Sept. 10 meeting, we shared information about the “College and Career Readiness” ESSA Indicator. Click the image above to watch the video about this indicator.

During the Sept. 24 meeting, we shared information about the “College and Career Readiness” ESSA Indicator and how student participation in extracurricular activities/workplace experiences is one way Addison Trail and Willowbrook are meeting that indicator. The administration highlighted the objectives for Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) at the schools and outlined the district’s tiered levels of support, as well as specific programs available at each tier of intervention. One way the district seeks to support students is by creating a sense of belonging through participation in athletics and extracurricular activities. The administration also discussed the results of the student workplace survey from Semester 2 of the 2017-18 school year, where students shared whether they were employed during the summer or school year and whether they participated in community service activities. Click the image above to watch the video about this indicator.

During the Oct. 15 meeting, we shared information about the ESSA Indicators regarding Graduation Rate, Chronic Absenteeism and Freshmen On-Track. Click the image above to watch the video about this indicator.

During the Oct. 15 meeting, Jeff Cohn with Brave Dialogue gave an update on the district’s Strategic Plan, including the timeline for this project. He shared data from staff and the internal stakeholder meetings and announced the upcoming workshops on Oct. 20 at Addison Trail and Oct. 27 at Willowbrook. Click the image above to watch the video.

During the Oct. 29 meeting, we shared an overview of the preliminary standardized assessment results from the 2017-18 school year. The presentation included preliminary SAT, ACCESS for ELs and Illinois Science Assessment results. The data sets are a component of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and are included on the district and school report cards that were released on Oct. 30.
